Camp Cope’s New Single ‘The Opener’ Is Another Swing At Music Industry Sexism
"It's another man telling us we can't fill up the room."
Melbourne favourites Camp Cope have shared a blistering new track titled ‘The Opener’, the first single off their upcoming second album.
It’s the first music from the trio since they released ‘Keep Growing’ at the end of last year. And in the vein of some of their best tracks, it’s another razor-sharp examination of the shitty sexism that is so prevalent in the Australian music industry.
Indeed, it’s very title ‘The Opener’ is a sly reference to venues booking female acts as openers just to fill up a quota.
“It’s another straight cis man who knows more about this than me,” vocalist Georgia Maq yells towards the end of the track. “It’s another man telling us we can’t fill up the room/ It’s another man telling us to book a smaller venue/ ‘Nah hey c’mon girls we’re only thinking about you’/ Well see how far we’ve come not listening to you.”
Over the last year, Camp Cope have tenaciously campaigned for the need for safe spaces at live music venues. On their national tour earlier this year, they implemented a hotline that punters could call if they felt uncomfortably or unsafe during the show.
The band will be premiering their new album early next month at a show at Melbourne’s Forum, check out all the details on their Facebook page. For now, get around ‘The Opener’ below.
