Of course it started with Terry Crews.

The cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine have been through a lot. A couple of weeks ago they were taken on a wild ride when their show was cancelled, then un-cancelled, in a matter of hours.

Fans were thrilled to get the nine-nine back, and they can look forward to their sixth season soon.

But in the meantime, the show’s cast aren’t done treating fans with little details about the set, show and love for one another.

This time around, they’ve let on exactly how the “nine-nine!” catchphrase began.

It started with an announcement that the show had won a Tell Tale TV award for best comedy:

Melissa Fumero, who plays Amy Santiago on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, shared the news with the famous phrase.

… and then revealed that it was Terry Crews who first used the phrase on set — even before it was ever written into the show.

And he was chuffed that Fumero brought it up.

Crews has been a busy man recently: he featured (briefly) in Deadpool 2, and is set to join Ludacris in new film John Henry, which is about a reformed gang member who has to decide whether to return to his old life when he meets two immigrant children.
