Remember last month when everyone was hyped up about Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul appearing to hint at more Breaking Bad? Yeah, turns out that isn’t what’s happening.

On June 26, the Breaking Bad actors both took to Twitter to share a stock photo of two donkeys, accompanied only by the word “soon”.

Speculation ran rife. Many fans were convinced they were teasing a trailer for the in-development Breaking Bad movie, which will see Aaron Paul return as Jesse Pinkman.

Anticipation only grew when, on July 3, both actors shared a photo of them wading through a river together while looking quizzical. They weren’t dressed like Walter White or Jesse, but the location fit right into the world of Breaking Bad. Excitement continued to build.

Sadly, these hopes and dreams began to deflate yesterday when the actors tweeted photos of themselves drinking. “A collaboration so smooth you can taste it. ? 24 hours people!”

Today, they finally came crashing down. Cranston and Paul have now revealed that, barring the involvement of both actors, their collaboration is not related to Breaking Bad at all. It isn’t even a film or television project.

In a lengthy Instagram post bearing the same narrative energy as a recipe blog, the pair declared that they are launching a new Mezcal called Dos Hombres. “We are crazy about the taste, the aroma, and the versatility of this smokey, age-old alcohol,” they said in the joint statement on Cranston’s Instagram. “Try it, and let us know what you think.”

I can’t imagine too many fans have tried the liquor yet. But they are certainly letting Cranston and Paul know what they think.

To be fair, Cranston and Paul never actually said that their collaboration would come in the form of more Breaking Bad. To be fairer, they knew full well what they were doing.

It’s understandable that, if both happen to have starred in a critically and commercially acclaimed television series, two business partners would want to use their combined celebrity to promote their new liquor.

However, considering the in-development film and the Breaking Bad-esque imagery of the actors’ cryptic posts, it was reasonably foreseeable that fans would conclude their teases was related to the series. It would have been nice if they’d put a bit more thought into their promotional strategy to help avoid fans feeling disappointed and misled.

Perhaps Cranston and Paul were hoping their Mezcal would numb the pain.
