Our First Look At ‘BoJack Horseman’ S5 Is Here And Oh God Is That A Man With A Hand As A Face?
Also, the horse is still troubled.
BoJack Horseman is almost back, baby, with Season 5 landing on Netflix next Friday. In the meantime, we can take a lot from the season’s first trailer.
For a quick recap: BoJack (Will Arnett) had a pretty turbulent time last season as he mined through some family trauma after meeting Hollyhock, his alleged daughter who turned out to be his sister.
Meanwhile, Princess Carolyn (Amy Sedaris) re-assessed her life after a miscarriage; Todd (Aaron Paul) explored what his asexuality meant; and Diane’s (Alison Brie) and Mr. Peanutbutter’s (Paul F. Tompkins) marriage is now extremely on the rocks, after the latter’s gubernatorial race spurned their massive divide. Love this fun animated comedy!
So what do we learn from the trailer? BoJack has a new gig: he’s playing the titular role of ‘Philbert’ in the gritty procedural that Princess Carolyn was working on last season.
Once again, he’s trying to be a better person, curbing his drinking — but he may be involved in a blackmail plot? We don’t learn a whole lot about the others, but importantly, Diane has new hair. That feels big for her.
One massive thing we do learn is that a Todd-like figure appears to have a hand for a face, a la the Thumb-Thumbs in Spy Kids. The wider implications for the Bojack Horseman universe remain unclear — while we’re used to the anthropomorphic animals by now, body horror marks new territory. Look, given that face-Todd is next to a robot Princess Carolyn, it’s probably a dream sequence — but who knows?
Watch the trailer below. Bojack Horseman Season 5 is released on Netflix Friday September 14.
