Byron Bay’s Bluesfest has been cancelled amid the growing concerns over the spread of coronavrius.

In a statement, organisers said they were “heartbroken” by the decision.

“We are heartbroken as we believe we were presenting one of the best ever bills of talent for you,” festival director Peter Noble said, as reported by Double J.

“We are now working through how to move forward and to give you details. I thank you for allowing us enough time to get everything in place for the best possible outcome for everyone.”

Information regarding refunds has not yet been released. It comes after the federal government was urged to ban gatherings of 500 people or more in order to contain the spread of the virus.

The festival was due to be headlined by Alanis Morissette, Patti Smith, Dave Matthews Band, Lenny Kravitz, and Crowded House.

It follows a string of festival and tour cancellations worldwide. Coachella, SXSW, Ultra Music Festival, Download Festival Australia, and Dark Mofo have all pulled the plug over the last fortnight.
