Netflix Drops A Trailer For Each New ‘Black Mirror’ Episode, And Surprise, They’re All Sad!
Get ready to feel uncomfortable about technology!
Black Mirror is returning to its roots.
For its fifth season, the devastating and inspired anthology TV show, created and mostly written by Charlie Brooker, is going back to a three episode format, meaning that fans of the series who have been spoiled with extra content for the last few years will have to settle for slightly less Black Mirror.
Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing. The last few seasons of the show, while good, have definitely suffered from a bit of bloat, and for every stroke of minimal genius like ‘Crocodile’ or ‘USS Callister’, there’s always been a ‘Playtest’ or an ‘Arkangel’.
Now, just as Brooker has mixed up his format, so too has Netflix. Having recently dropped a trailer that gives a full overview of the season, the streaming giant has now dropped trailers for each of the episodes, giving us an unusually early peak into what’s gonna go down.
First up is ‘Smithereens’, starring the unreasonably attractive Andrew Scott as an Uber driver who kidnaps an employee from a futuristic tech giant, a company presumably led by the peaced out but chilling Topher Grace spotted at the end of the trailer.
Then there’s ‘Striking Vipers’ starring Anthony Mackie as a potentially unfaithful husband, disinterested in conceiving a child with his distraught wife. Interestingly, the trailer for ‘Vipers’ seems to feature a Black Mirror callback — the little node that Mackie pops onto his head looks a lot like the one from season two episode ‘The Entire History Of You’. The show calling back on itself isn’t exactly a new thing — last season’s ‘Black Museum’ did the same.
Lastly we’ve got ‘Rachel, Jack And Ashley Too’, which, somewhat controversially, stars Miley Cyrus, making her Black Mirror debut. Of all the trailers, this is the one that’s hardest to parse a plot from, but looks like it’s gonna feature a popstar, a robot, and a lot of people staring mournfully out of windows. So ya know, no surprises there.
Black Mirror drops in full on June 5 on Netflix.
