Harley Quinn is the most joyously over-the-top villain in the DC Rogue’s Gallery, so it makes sense that the first film to truly star her, Birds of Prey, would be thoroughly batshit.

Starring Australia’s own Margot RobbieBirds of Prey is a break-up movie of sorts. Sick of being abused and mistreated by her one-time beau, the Joker, Quinn decides to blow him up. Newly emancipated and more than a little heartbroken, the Bronx-accented serial killer quickly finds herself tangled up in a war between Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) and the Birds of Prey, a squad of young vigilantes.

From there, the thing becomes a multi-coloured, neon drenched exercise in style and substance, full of hyenas named Bruce (a not-so-subtle reference to you know who), diamonds, violence, and more explosions.

Excitingly, the trailer makes it clear that the film is going all-in on the weirdness. Directed by Cathy Yan, a young filmmaker with only one acclaimed feature in her belt (the dark comedy Dead Pigs), the thing is a cavalcade of bold aesthetic choices.

Let’s hope it’s a good ‘un.
