Biffy Clyro Covered Cardi B’s ‘WAP’ And I’m Afraid It’s The Worst Thing Anyone’s Ever Done
"I could have went my whole life without hearing this and yet..."
The last few weeks have been a near non-stop cavalcade of great covers of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘WAP’. But the fun had to end eventually. And it appears like it has, thanks to a new “take” on the song by Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro.
Maybe that sounds too harsh to you. After all, could a cover really be so abrasive that it halts an entire trend? The answer you seek, I’m afraid, is contained within this video:
Yep, you heard right. The band changed every instance of the word “pussy” to the word “Biffy.” Unfortunately.
Clyro’s version of the song was recorded as part of BBC Radio’s acclaimed Live Lounge segment. Live Lounge is known for its bold interpretations of pop songs — just remember Lorde’s version of ‘In The Air Tonight’, or Harry Styles’ take on Lizzo. And this take on ‘WAP’ certainly is bold, if by bold you mean, “absolutely, unremittingly off chops.”
It’s also part of a sadly all-too common trend: rockstars covering rap, changing the lyrics, and completely missing the point. It wasn’t that long ago, for instance, that Australia’s own Philadelphia Grand Jury performed a twee version of ’99 Problems’ on triple j that contained liberal uses of the n-word, while messing around with the track’s anti-police messaging.
Anyway, in the hours since the Biffy Clyro version of ‘WAP’ went up, the internet has responded precisely as you would imagine — mostly with pure disbelief.
have we not suffered enough this year omg

I honestly expected coronavirus to be the worst thing to happen to this country in 2020 yet Biffy Clyro have somehow managed to top that https://t.co/cggVGjsQL6
