6 Must-Watch YouTube Channels To Keep You Entertained
YouTube wouldn’t be complete without slightly chaotic beauty vloggers.
Captain Morgan is Junkee's new Captain of Culture and he's about to make some captain's calls about everything you love.
So, you’ve burned through a treasure trove of trash reality TV and true crime sagas, and you’ve even ticked off all the prestige greats on yer list? It’s time you turned to the new horizon of entertainment: YouTube.
Like I told my crew, it’s a magical place where mukbang queens and beauty vloggers reign supreme, and everything from comedy sketches to makeup tutorials can be dug up wherever you look. Pour yourself a Captain and cola and settle in, because your next night of entertainment is just a click away.
Lest you end up following the whims of the pesky algorithm, here are my favourite YouTube channels:
#1 Stephanie Soo
This LA native makes mukbang videos – a trend that sailed out from South Korea where vloggers chat about whatever they want while chowing down on massive meals. If you don’t get why it’s so popular, clearly you haven’t watched Stephanie Soo tackle a mountain of spicy black bean noodles while ranting about relationships, crying while trying to finish syringe-filled ‘nuclear’ fried chicken, or discussing the day’s news over In-N-Out.
Press play and chill out: a Stephanie Soo video is basically like gossiping with a friend over the most ridiculous, cheesy meals you could ever think of.
#2 Dust
My first love will always be the sea, but recently I’ve been taken by your most peculiar sci-fi genre. This channel is a treasure trove of exciting new sci-fi short films – since launching in 2018, it’s uploaded more than 400 films that are each as odd and otherworldly as the last. High-budget and high-concept, the collection stars celebs like Stranger Things‘ Natalie Dyer, Love Actually‘s Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Game Of Thrones‘ Bella Ramsey.
#3 Flossie
The first thing I learned about YouTube is that it wouldn’t be complete without slightly chaotic beauty vloggers. One of my favourites is Flossie Clegg, a 19-year-old British vlogger who puts inventive spins on classic video formats like McDonald’s mukbangs, ‘basic TikToker’ makeovers, and hilarious videos where her parents rate her outfits.
Come for the fashion advice, but stay for the video of her cutting her own hair. After watching her channel, I can say with (almost) total confidence that I’d trust her to cut my precious long locks – as long as she filmed it.
#4 Safiya Nygaard
The internet is a strange new frontier for me, but what’s most surprising is all the things you can buy online. For the past three years, Safiya Nygaard has been buying all the weird things she can find and trying them out so simple folk like us don’t have to. She’s tested at-home sauna boxes, period-proof swimsuits, and clear plastic jeans (shudder) to share the often-hilarious results.
She also tries out the latest “must-have” beauty and fashion products and trends, which have really levelled up my look when I want a glam night out on the high seas. My favourite might be when she bought her wedding dress from Wish: as you can imagine, it didn’t go well.
#5 ScreenCrush
If, like me, you’re the kind of pop-culture obsessive who needs to dissect every single frame of a movie or TV show, ScreenCrush has you covered. The channel dives deep (get it? Like in the ocean) into things like The Mandalorian and Avengers: Endgame to reveal background clues and Easter eggs you might’ve missed while watching.
#6 Colleen Ballinger
Colleen Ballinger has done it all, but you probably know her better as Miranda Sings. Her dastardly alter-ego, a larger-than-life theatre kid with as much self-confidence as yours truly, was one of YouTube’s OG stars.
While Miranda became the star of her own Netflix show, Haters Back Off!, Ballinger remains as endearing as ever on YouTube. She does it all, like cutting her husband’s hair, teaching her mum TikTok dances, and cooking the weirdest recipes she can find. I liked it when she tested pool toys, because it was entertaining and inspirational for my crew’s next beach day.
