Now's the perfect time to check out all the podcasts you've had on your radar.

The Best Podcasts To Get Stuck Into, Now You Finally Have The Time
Brought to you by Captain Morgan

Captain Morgan is Junkee's new Captain of Culture and he's about to make some captain's calls about everything you love.

Look, I’ll be honest with yer, when I first heard about “podcasts”, I thought it was a place where you dock a ship!

Seriously, though, who doesn’t have a podcast these days?

There’s a lot of them and no topic is off-limits or too odd to have a podcast built around it. But right when I get into a podcast, my neighbour Greg is like, “Oh, Captain. You have to listen to these 18 new podcasts I am obsessed with”. Poor Greg, little does he know the only thing a person is allowed to be obsessed with is the sea. I hear her, she calls my name.

There are 201 episodes of the television series The Office and two of the show’s stars, Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela), are doing the ultimate re-watch. ‘Tis a very good comedy television show and it’s fascinating to hear how it was made.

The internet continues to baffle me, but this podcast helps make sense of the world wide web (more like the world wild web, amirite?). Hosts PJ Vogt and Alex Goldman feature stories about the internet and the people behind the memes, viral videos, and all the other weird stuff that happens.

#3 Dragon Friends

It will take me over 18 hours to explain role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, but they’re very popular, and even more popular with people who make podcasts. There are a lot of these podcasts out there, but Dragon Friends is the best. Join your dungeon masters (Dave Harmon, Ben Jenkins) and go on a quest with Philge the half-orc barbarian (Alex Lee), Freezo the high elf warlock (Michael Hing) and halfling rogue Bobby Pancakes (Simon Greiner).

#4 The Drop Out

An investigative podcast about the scallywags who ran a business called Theranos and their founder Elizabeth Holmes. The six-part series is based on three years (!!!) of research into what made the company so dodgy and how they tricked a lot of people. Dastardly deeds!

Two of the greatest minds from The New York Times, Wesley Morris and Jenna Wortham, sit down to discuss topics they can’t stop thinking about. If I was on this podcast, every episode would be about the sea, sailing, treasure, or my large collection of captain’s hats. I must admit, though, their conversations are always lively and intelligent, and you walk away feeling a little more informed about the world.

#6 Dolly Parton’s America

All I’m saying is, you can replace the words to Jolene with “the sea, the sea, the sea, the seeeaaaa” and it still bangs, as you say. Each episode talks about Dolly Parton’s music and her place in the American history books.

#7 Little Gold Men

There’s one thing the people who make television and films like more than their jobs and that’s giving television and films awards! The folks on Little Gold Men discuss the films and television shows that should get the most awards. One day I hope to guest star to talk about my debut film, “The Sea: A Love Story”.

#8 Dissect

What makes an album good? If you ask me, it’s the number of sea shanties it has. Dissect discusses all the other things that contribute to quality tunes, focusing on one album each season. So far, they’ve delved into music by Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Kanye West and more.

#9 Mystery Show

Starlee Kine solves mysteries. That’s it. That’s the podcast. Honorary captain of mystery Starlee helps people track down missing belt buckles, investigates a video store that closes down overnight, and goes in search of Britney Spears (a queen whose tunes carry across the ocean) to ask if she really did read an author’s book

#10 Girl Gang The Podcast

If you’re thinking about opening a haberdashery, then this is the podcast for you. Amy Will talks to successful ladies from the business world about their careers and how they became captains of industry! Huzzah to them all!

Food, glorious food. There are mad people out there who are obsessed with growing the hottest chilis in the world. Marc Fennell tracks them down and discovers there’s a lot more to it than just putting seeds in the ground. There be devils and hot sauces.
