On Wednesday, England progressed to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup after beating Colombia in a dramatic penalty shoot-out. And it’s safe to say that the staff at the BBC were pretty darn excited about it.

The reaction of the BBC newsroom was captured in a piece of footage featuring BBC News presenter Ros Atkins. Atkins was trying to report on an unrelated story, only to be interrupted by raucous cheers coming from just off camera after Colombia missed a crucial shot on goal.

“I think I might just abandon this and talk about the football,” he quipped.

Atkins wasn’t able to show footage of the shoot-out as the BBC doesn’t have the World Cup broadcast rights. But just as he was explaining this, another huge cheer made it pretty clear what had happened.

“I think that means England are through,” he said with a smile, as his colleagues continued to lose their shit in the background. “General pandemonium, and that’s just here in the newsroom.”

And if that doesn’t fill your people being happy about sports quota for the day, check out the reaction of the ITV commentary team.
