Apparently the world of comics was gearing up for its own Royal Wedding, with caped crusader Batman set to tie the knot with his long time nemesis Catwoman in Batman Vol. 3, No. 50. It was gonna be a big nuptial-themed superhero event — but then some pesky headline from the New York Times foiled the wedding bliss.

Spoilers for Batman Vol. 3, No. 50 follow below.

So, while Batman and Catwoman’s weird animal wedding was highly hyped, with comic book stores set to open late and even have wedding-themed parties with cakes and invitations, the NYT managed to somehow fuck it all up.

A story by New York Times comics correspondent George Gene Gustines appeared in the Vows column of the New York Times Style section, alongside nonfictional wedding announcements, which is cute. The problem was that it bore the spoilerific headline “It Just Wasn’t Meant to Be, Batman“, before the issue was out.

Turns out, Batman does not get married to Catwoman. Holy crushed expectations!

People were politely furious over the spoil, and quickly went online to voice their frustrations: including the writer of the comic himself, Tom King.

Talking to Vulture, the New York Times writer who spoiled the headline elaborated on what happened:

“After I pitched the story, I learned the wedding would not happen. It seemed disingenuous to write the story without revealing the ending, which is why I included the reveal. But I should’ve asked for a non-spoiler headline. We should have given more thought so that the casual reader, flipping or scrolling through the Style section, would not know the twist by reading the headline.”

Anyway, our best wishes go out to Batman on this trying day.
