You never need to think about Ben Affleck again.

It’s been a rough couple of years for Batman since Christian Bale hung up the cowl. Ben Affleck’s take on the caped crusader has left audiences underwhelmed — although in fairness to him, not even the greatest actor on the planet could have done much with the scripts to Justice League and Batman vs. Superman.

Fortunately, it looks as though 2018 could be the year that Bruce Wayne redeems himself. Turns out DC and Warner Brothers Japan have been hard at work on a Batman anime film, the first trailer for which hit the web earlier this week. And holy crap does it look good.

Batman Ninja sees a number of Gotham’s most iconic characters — including Bats, Robin, The Joker and Harley Quinn — transported to Japan in the Middle Ages. It’s not entirely clear how this happens, but if it means we get to see The Dark Knight take on The Clown Prince of Crime with a samurai sword, then I’m willing to suspend my disbelief.

The film is directed by Jumpei Mizusaki, with character design by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki. Wrap your eyeballs around the trailer below.

I mean, of course it’s got a giant robot in it.

Ninja Batman will be released in 2018.
