"You see why we couldn't put this in the show. It seems like it would never happen, and it did."

One of the standout episodes of the latest season of Aziz Ansari’s Master of None is ‘Religion’, a personal and yet deeply relatable story about Dev’s reckoning with eating pork as a Muslim.

Drawing from Ansari’s real life, the story wrestles with some Big Questions: how and when do you separate your parents’ beliefs from your own? Do you need to abide by all aspects of a religion to be ‘religious’? Also, how do people hold themselves back from eating bacon, yum yum.

Now, in accepting an award at The Moth’s 20th Anniversary Gala last night, Ansari has expanded on the story in the show with some parts that seemed too crazy to include.

It’s true that he first tasted bacon at a friend’s house as a kid and then started to question the full constricts of his family’s faith; it’s true that his parents confronted him over this much later when he was eating pork noodles at a restaurant. But, as it turns out, it went further than that. He then literally got caught out again the next morning eating bacon and eggs on the street, and his parents accused his girlfriend of forcing him to eat pork against his will.

The whole thing is very cute and good. Ansari was the guest of honour at The Moth gala last night for his storytelling on Master of None. The full clip definitely shows he’s worth the acclaim:

Master of None‘s new season is on Netflix now.
