All The Juicy Details You Might Have Missed In The New ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Trailer

Last night, while sensible Australians were sleeping, Marvel dropped a new trailer for Avengers: Endgame.

I am not a sensible person, and so I’ve now watched the trailer at least 467 times. It reveals A LOT — like, a surprising amount, and seems to confirm some popular fan theories.  Before we get into it, be warned — if you hate any kind of spoilers, maybe don’t go on?

This is all just guessing and analysis, of course, but you know.

First, watch the trailer:

Let’s Break Down The Avengers: Endgame Trailer…

The trailer opens with a flashback to the first Iron Man — the movie that started it all. There are a few things to note here.

First, the flashback is in black and white with some small red highlights (as all the flashbacks in this trailer are). Now, there could be some deeper meaning, but to be honest I think it’s a) just to emphasise the fact that it’s in the past and differentiate it from new footage; b) because it looks cool; and c) red is Marvel’s brand.

As for the opening shots themselves, they’re of Tony after he crash-landed once he escaped that cave in his rudimentary Iron Man suit.

Since he’s stranded in space at the start of Avengers: Endgame, highlighting this past moment suggests he’ll escape death once again by using his own genius and resourcefulness. It’s also significant that the trailer puts so much emphasis on the past — in these opening shots, and in the ones that follow — because it sets up perfectly the idea that that is exactly where Avengers: Endgame will go.

Yes, all those rumours that the gang will have to time travel and revisit the past to defeat Thanos are basically confirmed with this trailer.

Next we see a shot of the Iron Man helmet, which we know from an earlier trailer that Tony is using to try to get a message to Pepper.

His voiceover over these scenes says, “It seems like a thousand years ago — I fought my way out of that cave, became Iron Man, realised I love you. I know I said no more surprises, but I was hoping I could pull off one last one.”

Which is all very touching, but what gets me most excited is the idea that Tony WILL pull off another surprise and make it back home safe (more on that in a sec).

We get additional flashbacks to key moments in Tony and Pepper’s relationship — when she gave him his “heart” in Iron Man, and when she thought he was dead in Iron Man 3, but, of course, he wasn’t. Foreshadowing!

Then there’s a shot of Tony on board the Guardians of the Galaxy’s ship Benatar, which we’ve seen in previous trailers. It looks like the ship isn’t doing well, so it’ll be interesting to see how Tony (and Nebula, who is also on board) get out of this one.

We switch to a flashback from Captain America: The First Avenger, with a pre-serum Steve staring wistfully at an army recruitment poster. There’s no doubt that despite his (many, many) muscles, deep down Steve is still that boy from Brooklyn who just wanted to fight for what was right and protect others.

The general mood is one of grief and regret, as the trailer cuts to a shot of the Statue of Liberty in the aftermath of the Snap, and Steve looking sad at his support group. Over these scenes, we hear Peggy Carter’s words to Steve from Captain America: Civil War:

“The world has changed. None of us can go back. All we can do is our best. And sometimes the best that we can do is to start over.”

This voiceover serves a few purposes.

First, it reinforces the sorrow the characters feel over what happened, with Peggy’s words “the world has changed” taking on a whole new meaning. But it also introduces the idea of going back — and despite Peggy saying “none of us can”, it’s safe to assume that’s exactly what the Avengers will be doing.

“The best we can do is start over” indicates restarting the whole damn timeline and preventing Thanos from ever getting the Infinity Stones in the first place.

On top of all that, the fact that it’s Peggy speaking backs up her brief cameo in the first trailer, highlighting Steve’s connection to her. It could just be to reinforce his sense of loss, but I really hope it means that as a result of all the time travel, he’ll somehow find his way back to her.

Side note: It’s fitting that Tony’s ~moment~ in the trailer is followed up with Cap’s, since they’re the two leaders of the Avengers and their fraught history has shaped the entire cinematic universe.

Their relationship will no doubt play a key role in Avengers: Endgame.

Back to the trailer. The next shot is of Clint a.k.a. Hawkeye happily tutoring a young girl with a bow and arrow while other kids play in the background.

This is obviously a pre-snap moment of Hawkeye with his family. Some fans have theorised the girl practicing archery is Kate Bishop, who becomes Hawkeye after Clint, but it’s probably actually his daughter Lila. Of course, Marvel could be combining the two characters into one.

We then see a shot that is a stark contrast to the one that came before — Clint in full Ronin mode (Ronin is an identity he takes on in the comics during a dark period in his life).

He’s in Japan, and Nat has come to get him. She looks concerned, and reaches out a hand, suggesting comfort but also the fact that she’s going to bring him home. It looks like Clint lost his entire family in the Snap and gives in to a life of violence before Nat offers him an alternative path.

Cut to another flashback of Steve, this time at Peggy’s funeral — highlighting once again the losses he’s suffered but also HIS LOVE FOR HER (I am not letting this die, I’m going to be so mad if the two of them don’t get their dance for real before all this is over).

 

Now it’s Thor’s turn. We see flashbacks to (just some of) what he’s lost — Asgard, and his father, Odin.

There’s also shots from Avengers: Infinity War of Thor witnessing the deaths of those around him in horror after he failed to kill Thanos and prevent the Snap.

We hear Thor in an emotional voiceover say, “I saw all these people die”. Thor has witnessed a lot of shit, and his burden is perhaps heavier than anyone else’s going into Avengers: Endgame. There’s a sense that he feels personal responsibility and deep regret over everything that’s happened. My poor pirate angel baby.

There’s also a shot of Cap touching the spot where Bucky disintegrated in front of his eyes in Infinity War, just to drive home HIS losses. Which is frankly rude.

Then we get Steve and Nat having a chat, with Steve saying “I keep telling everyone they should move on. Some do. But not us.”

Steve could be talking about the fact that they’re stuck in their grief, but actually it seems to be connected to the idea that they have a plan — and moreover, that the plan isn’t moving on but literally going back.

What’s really interesting here is that Natasha’s hair has grown a lot, with the blonde she sported in Avengers: Infinity War giving way to her natural red. Steve, meanwhile, has lost his beard (RIP) and got a haircut. Their different looks confirm the theory that there will be a significant time jump into the future in Endgame, before we see them travel back into the past.

We get one shot of Bruce Banner looking very worried. He’s not in this trailer much, which in itself is very ~curious~. Marvel seem to be holding back something big about him (perhaps the fact he will permanently merge with the Hulk?!).

 

We see Scott Lang, obviously newly emerged from the Quantum Realm he was left stuck in in the mid-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp, trying to figure out what the hell happened and looking in horror at all the missing posters.

There’s a shot of Nat’s ship flying over Tokyo, and we see Clint and Nat together and suited up in their standard black. She was obviously successful in her mission to get him back.

Then there’s Clint running through an EXPLODING TUNNEL, followed by Rocket Raccoon and War Machine looking fierce and ready to fight. Over these shots, we hear Nat saying “Even if there’s a small chance, we owe this to everyone who’s not in this room — to try.”

We then see Steve saying “we will” with determination, while an emotional Clint with his shiny new grief haircut seems intrigued.

Cut to Scott in his Ant-Man suit looking very worried, then Thor going all STORM BOI with the lightning and thunder and his new weapon, Stormbreaker.

We see Nebula angry and on the attack in what looks like a desolate warzone, then Clint with his trusty bow and arrow, an (all-blonde!) Natasha doing target practice, and a filthy Cap strapping his shield on with gritted teeth in what looks like the same warzone Nebula was in.

Ant-Man, in what is possibly that warzone again if the fire in the background is anything to go by, uses a pencil to boost his dive over the edge of…something.

Then there’s a shot of Tony back on the Benatar, looking intense. Over these scenes, we can hear Steve, Nat, Clint and Tony each saying “whatever it takes”. Which is both EXCITING and also SCARY because OH MY GOD ONE OR MORE OF THEM IS GONNA DIE AREN’T THEY.

Next is the REALLY important shot — the squad walking through the Avengers compound in brand new suits.

 

We see Steve, Scott, Rhodey, Nat, Clint and, oh yeah, TONY AND NEBULA, meaning that they definitely make it back to Earth safe and sound (yay!).

The new suits are also significant — it’s likely they’re wearing them to enter the Quantum Realm, and that’s how they’ll travel back into the past. Remember in the mid-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp, when Janet van Dyne told Scott to be careful of the “time vortexes”? Yeah, that line was there for a reason.

The next shot is the title card, but it’s worth noting something about this — pieces resembling the dust that everyone crumbled into at the end of Avengers: Endgame come together to build it, indicating that the team will indeed reverse what happened and bring everyone back.

Finally, we have a funny sequence in which we see Captain Marvel in the Avengers compound, with Thor showing off by summoning Stormbreaker right next to her head, to which she doesn’t even bat an eyelid.

They have a brief stare-off before Carol smirks and Thor declares “I like this one” (personally, I can’t wait to see what kind of damage these two glowy space angels can do together). Nat’s hair is still short and blonde here, so this takes place not long after the end of Avengers: Infinity War and the mid-credits scene in Captain Marvel, in which we saw Carol arrive at the compound.

Phew! Only one month left guys. Bring it on!
