2Day Network presenter Ash London has been forced off Twitter after facing a torrent of abuse from former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson’s fans.

It all started when London interviewed Tomlinson earlier this week while presenting a Summer breakfast show with Ed Kavalee and guest Ash Williams, who both said they couldn’t tell which member of One Direction Tomlinson was.

Introducing the interview, the hosts engaged in a little banter:

“Just so we’re clear, because I’m a very visual guy, he’s the guy with the smaller face with the short brown hair?” Williams asked London in the lead up to the interview.

“Kind of like ratty facial hair…” London replied.

“He’s not Harry Styles basically,” said Kavalee. “He’s the least popular one.”

As soon as the interview was posted online Tomlinson’s fans began attacking the three hosts, but most of the vitriol was directed at London. Many of the fans attributed comments to London that were actually made by her male co-hosts, because, y’know, the internet.

As soon as the abuse began, London set her Twitter account to private before re-appearing briefly to post a message.

“I am a music fan. I love that it brings so much passion out in people,” she said. “This morning on air we had a great interview with Louis. As always — he was a total legend. I loved talking about how far he’s come, his new music and his future which looks so bright.

“We love Louis and will continue supporting him and his new music as we have always done.”

Tomlinson didn’t help, he tweeted in response to London, saying she “best stay on private for a bit longer, love”, accompanied by a middle finger emoji.

That tweet has so far received more than 5000 replies and 16,000 retweets. Tomlinson has more than 31 million followers on Twitter.

In a second Tweet, London said she is “going off socials for a bit”.

“The abuse and threats are a little much for me right now,” she said. “I won’t go on private because I don’t have anything to hide. In future I’ll do what I always do —  stick to music and leave any mentions of facial hair out of it.”
