Somewhere along the line (I blame Christopher Nolan) a new breed of blockbuster emerged that used the spectacle and flashy premises of traditional action films, but imbued them with greater and more serious messages of morality, spirituality and ‘what is real?” subtext. Sometimes these films turn out to be great (Inception!) and sometimes they are needlessly confusing (Interstellar?).

Arrival could go either way. The film, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, is about an alien invasion of Earth in which mysterious monoliths start appearing across the globe. Being a very good translator, Amy Adams is tasked with communicating with the aliens. “I am a human,” Adams clarifies in the trailer.

Looks fun! Arrival is out on November 10.
