The ARIA End Of Year Charts Are In And…Where Are All The Australians?
*Squints at list*
If you thought Australia listened to anything other than Ed Sheeran in 2017, you were wrong.
Chart cruncher ARIA has just released its full rundown of what Australians were listening to (and buying) in 2017, and the English ginger mop has taken out the top spot for highest selling album and highest selling single of the year for Divide and ‘Shape Of You’.
More than that, Sheeran has nabbed a further three spots in the single top ten with ‘Castle On The Hill’, ‘Galway Girl’, and the ready-for-weddings song ‘Perfect’.
The rest of the singles rankings feature some familiar suspects: ‘Despacito‘ happily sits at #2, while frat boy duo The Chainsmokers come in at #5 with ‘Something Just Like This’.
Pnau’s 2016 track ‘Chameleon’ is the highest selling local single at #32, while Dean Lewis’ ‘Waves’, Starley’s ‘Call On Me’, and Amy Shark’s ‘Adore’ (also a 2016 tune )also make it in before the #50 mark.
Pink nabs runner up in the album rankings with her record Beautiful Trauma, while Taylor Swift’s much-discussed Reputation lands at #3. The rest of the top ten sees no less than three soundtrack entries — from Moana, Trolls, and Guardians of the Galaxy — and even Michael Bublé’s Christmas album makes it in at #8. Kendrick Lamar’s incendiary album DAMN. only just sneaks in at #10.
If you’re wondering where the Australians are in this list…well yeah, we are too. Paul Kelly’s Life Is Fine is the highest selling Australian album at #14, while the rest of the top 50 features entries from Jessica Mauboy, INXS, Tina Arena, and Bliss N Eso, Tash Sultana, and Gang Of Youths. The entire top 100 albums features 27 local albums, while the singles list includes just nine local songs — and four of those were released in 2016. Which is…not a great turnout.
