Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any more cursed, rumours of the world’s most-famous haunted doll escaping from an occult museum start to spread.

Over the weekend, people begun to claim that Annabelle — the haunted doll that inspired the horror movie Annabelle from The Conjuring franchise — had escaped from the currently-closed Warrens’ Occult Museum, where she had been housed in a glass box since the ’70s.

The rumours of the doll escaping started to circulate after a now-deleted update to the doll’s Wikipedia page claimed that Annabelle escaped in the early morning hours of August 14. However, Tony Spera, son-in-law of the infamous paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and the current owner of the Warren’s museum, cleared up these rumours in a YouTube video.

“I don’t know if you want to hear this or not, but Annabelle did not escape,” Spera said, standing in front of the caged doll. “Annabelle’s alive – well, I shouldn’t say alive – Annabelle’s here, in all her infamous glory. She never left the museum. Remember, I have high-tech security here. If she had left the museum I’d instantly know if something happened or somebody broke in.”

It’s believed that the whole misunderstanding came from a mistranslation of an interview with British actress Annabelle Wallis, who also happened to have a role in AnnabelleWhile chatting to The Hollywood Reporter about literal running with her Mummy co-star, Tom Cruise, Chinese translations claimed that “Annabelle escaped” after escape scenes from the film were included in the piece.

Despite the whole “Annabelle escaped” thing being a confirmed hoax, this didn’t stop people from sharing their best Annabelle memes after the rumour started trending over the weekend.
