Fake Heiress Anna Sorokin Talks About Accessorising Ankle Bracelet After Release On House Arrest
"I’m thinking what I can do with it. I’m not a glam-it-up type of person, but the possibilities are endless."
Notorious con woman Anna Sorokin, known widely by her alias Anna Delvey, has been released from jail into house arrest pending an immigration trial.
Sorokin was notorious for deceiving friends and strangers into investing thousands into her personal brand after constructing the fake identity of a wealthy Russian heiress in the 2010s.
While Sorokin’s girlboss financial frauds were widely popularised after a viral article in New York Magazine — even resulting in the Netflix biopic Inventing Anna featuring Ozark actress Julia Garner as the titular faux-heiress — Sorokin herself has been forced to watch her celebrity status blossom from inside a prison cell.
In 2019, Sorokin was sentenced to four years in jail after being convicted of a slew of crimes, including swindling her way onto a private jet and forging dud checks in excess of USD$200,000. After her release in 2021, Sorokin was swiftly rearrested by American immigration authorities for breaching her visa and has remained in detention ever since.
Now, Sorokin has been allowed to await her pending immigration trial from house arrest after a New York judge recently deemed Sorokin to no longer be a risk to the community.
“I’m really happy. So many immigration lawyers told me I’d get deported to Mars before I’d get out in New York” Sorokin told The New York Times. “I just had to find the person who’d align with my vision, not accept ‘no’ for an answer and make it happen.”
In an interview conducted shortly after Sorokin’s release from ICE detention, the fake heiress discussed how she’s already enjoying the benefits of house arrest, while musing on the “endless” fashion potential of her court-ordered ankle bracelet.
“I’m thinking what I can do with it.” Sorokin said. “I’m not a glam-it-up type of person, but the possibilities are endless.”
But despite Sorokin’s new outlook, some mysteries remain. For example, after her release into house arrest, just how did Sorokin miraculously manage to secure a one bedroom apartment in upmarket Manhattan with less than a week’s notice?
“I guess you’ll have to ask the government.” Sorokin tells the interviewer, while confirming that the bail money and funds use to secure her new lease were both hers.
“I’ve not figured my whole life out in two days. But I’ve managed to do something out of my life while being in jail, so I guess this will be a little easier.”
While Sorokin managed to pay the retainers for an entire social media division to manage her brand over her three years of imprisonment, a condition of her bail will prohibit Sorokin from using social media. Sorokin appeared unphased by the ban, professing that she’s just “really really happy’ to be back in New York.
“That’s exactly what I wanted. I’m just hoping to get more freedom eventually. And hopefully, ICE will see that New York will remain safe — even if one day I’m able to leave this apartment.”
