First came American Psycho the novel, the divisive masterpiece by Bret Easton Ellis. Then came American Psycho the movie, the cult film adaptation starring Christian Bale, Jared Leto, Chloe Sevigny and Reese Witherspoon.
Now there’s American Psycho the Musical, which retells the story of Patrick Bateman with added song and dance.
From June 3-27, American Psycho the Musical will play at the Sydney Opera House, returning after a sold-out 2019 season at the Hayes Theatre that earned the company nine Sydney Theatre Awards.
The stage adaptation of American Psycho will dig into sex, murder, and Wall Street, delivering a social satire every bit as pitch black as the novel it’s based on.
Set in the late 1980s, the story follows Patrick Bateman, a young and wealthy investment banker whose interests include fashion, Huey Lewis and the News, and the occasional spot of serial murder.
The subject matter is still adults-only but the musical’s biting commentary about capitalism, image, and success is wickedly funny. It’s also got a Walkman-worthy soundtrack featuring ‘80s favourites like ‘In the Air Tonight’ and ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’.
Tickets to American Psycho the Musical are already on sale, so head over to the Sydney Opera House website to book. It’s a scream.
