All I Want For Christmas Is Terrible Mashups
On Tuesday, November 1, 1994, the world changed forever. It was over a month out from Christmas — just early enough that the most eager amongst us were beginning to put up their trees and tinsel. Posters for The Santa Clause populated cinemas. The year was reaching its end, and people were turning their minds to pavlova and prawns shared with tolerated ones.
But though 1995 would soon be upon us, 1994 was not done yet. In August of that year, in a New York recording studio that no longer exists, a singer had recorded the lead single from her fourth studio album. Three months later it was now ready, and Mariah Carey’s seasonal love song ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ was set loose upon the public.
‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ did not become the voice of a generation. To say so would be to limit what it achieved. It spoke not only to the people of that moment, but to all those who came after. It transcended time and age, a musical immortal, everlasting and constant. It became a phenomenon, and has inspired countless covers, dance acts, and drunken karaoke sessions.
There are some scrooges who may say playing ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ on repeat is not an acceptable Christmas playlist. They are obviously wrong. But Christmas is a time of compassion, of love and understanding. The charitable thing to do is to reach out and meet people where they are limited, demonstrating our care and support for them despite their misguided convictions.
So, as a Christmas compromise, I have compiled some ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ mashups to fill your Christmas playlist and teach everyone about the true meaning of Christmas: Mariah Carey’s birthday.
