Sylvester Stallone has been the face of two of the all-time classic movie characters: Rocky Balboa and John Rambo. Despite the two franchises generating billions of dollars and eleven movies between them, Stallone’s never snagged an award for his decades-long work; he was nominated for two Oscars way back in 1977 when the original Rocky was up for some gongs, but he didn’t win, and the 39 years since have been pretty bereft of awards opportunities.

It’s understandable, in a way: Rocky and Rambo aren’t exactly the most cerebral franchises, and they’re geared more to win mass-audience appeal rather than critical acclaim. But for an actor of Stallone’s longevity and stature, not having a single major acting award to his name must have stung.

Maybe that’s why, when Stallone was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role in 2015’s Creed at the Golden Globes earlier today Australian time, the room erupted in acclamation like he’d just decked Ivan Drago at the end of Rocky IV. Stallone himself looked like he was about to cry, which must be difficult when your face is carved out of volcanic rock.

Taking to the stage, a visibly emotional Stallone thanked his wife, the director who gave him his start and more or less everybody he’s ever worked with, declaring: “I am the sum total of everyone I’ve ever met” and thanking his “imaginary friend Rocky Balboa, for being the best friend I ever had.”

It was extremely cute.

EVERYONE IS SO HAPPY FOR HIM.

I dunno why I’m suddenly so emotionally invested in this but I am, so here are some more Rocky gifs. The last one is the best.
