Ti West is one of the most original and exciting horror filmmakers of the last few decades, a true game-changer in the genre, capable of mixing the old with the new.

If you haven’t seen any of West’s films, you’re missing out. His magnum opus, and the best place to start, is the vicious and bare bones House of the Devil. Following a young babysitter (Jocelin Donahue) who becomes mixed up with an evil Satanic cult, the film combines the nerve-ratcheting tension of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a humour and zaniness entirely of West’s own. It rules, is what I am trying to say.

But West has been sadly out of the game for a few years now. He’s been busy directing television, helming episodes of The Exorcist and Them, honing his horror chops for the small screen. Which makes his welcome return to the theatre with X that much more exciting.

The film, which is distributed by major horror player A24 (the people behind Hereditary and Midsommar) has all of the hallmarks of a great West project. Centred on a group of young aspiring filmmakers who descend upon a rural barn in order to make a porno, it has a simplicity to its premise that will presumably give West the time and space to do some genuinely unnerving things.

I mean, the trailer is full of foreboding tension, with the young filmmakers besieged by a mysterious older woman and her unnerving husband. There’s not much in the way of violence in the trailer, but given this is West, it’s best to expect a whole bunch of blood and guts.

Oh, and if you’re not sold yet, then just look at that cast — everyone from Mia Goth, best known for her performance in High Life, and Kid Cudi, the rapper-turned-actor are set to make appearances.

Watch the trailer in full, and prepare to have your heart pound.
