The original Zombieland was that rarest of things: a genuine cult object.

Released in 2009, starring a then only moderately well-known Emma Stone, the film had a bizarre, distinctly gory energy all of its own. Gone was the faux seriousness of other zombie flicks, replaced with a bloody good sense of fun. Zombies are dispatched in increasingly inventive ways, Bill Murray is (spoilers) shot right in the guts, and the plot pivots on a veritable truckload of Twinkies.

Given that energy, not to mention the film’s considerable success at the box office (it made almost four times its budget during its theatrical run), a sequel seemed inevitable.

But then: nearly eight years of silence. The cast and crew went their separate ways, with director Ruben Fleischer helming last year’s Venom, and Stone and Eisenberg enjoying turns in bigger, considerably more serious projects.

Nonetheless, it seems like that old zombie adage is true — you really can’t keep the dead down. Yep, almost a decade after the original hit our screens, the series is back with a gloriously titled sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap.

There’s not much plot to go on from the trailer, but hey, who needs plot when you have a zombie getting chewed up in a thresher?
