“They Are Taking The Piss”: Yassmin Abdel-Magied Ripped Into The Government On ‘The Project’
"It's like the Australian politicians are playing some sort of game in their own world"
Yassmin Abdel-Magied is back in Australia, and she’s absolutely ripped into the government on The Project like the legend she is.
She was technically on the show to promote an upcoming appearance at the Melbourne Writers Festival, but when a host asked her what she thought of last week’s leadership spill nonsense she didn’t hold back.
“Lols, lols,” was her immediate response. “Like, honestly, they are taking the piss. Genuinely, it’s like the Australian politicians are playing some sort of game in their own world, and not really taking seriously the fact that they’re running a country.”
“And it’s honestly offensive. As an Australian, I’m like, we deserve better. I got on the plane and someone was Prime Minister, I got off the plane and three other people had maybe been Prime Minister.”
“I think it’s really embarrassing for them. And also, if anyone ever says to me that women can’t do something, or people of colour aren’t able to do something, I’ll be like right, is this the best that you white men have?” she added, to massive applause.
And honestly, that pretty much nails it. It was also a pretty brave opinion to voice, given that last time Yassmin dared to give an opinion on politics she lost her job and was run out of the country by racist dickheads. She spoke about that experience on The Project last night as well, talking about the strangeness of having to write a eulogy for her career at age 27.
“I really did feel like I was mourning a past Yassmin that isn’t really going to exist any more,” she said. “That’s really heartbreaking. That sense of loss is deep. And you don’t know what to do with it, there’s no handbook for how to deal with any sort of grief.”
You can watch her whole segment on The Project below. It’s good to have her back, if only for a few days.
We chat to @yassmin_a about writing a eulogy for her career, her thoughts on the current state of #auspol and getting offered a place on an F1 team! #MWF18 #TheProjectTV pic.twitter.com/kb5SrGoH9U
