This week, video game developer Blizzard launched World of Warcraft Classic: A recreation of the beloved massive multiplayer online game as it existed in 2006. Gone are the Pandaren and Blood Elves, Northrend and the Broken Isles. Players are going back to simpler times, before the world got too big and scary. Well, they’re trying to.

Nostalgic World of Warcraft fans have been eagerly anticipating the launch of World of Warcraft Classic since it was announced in 2017. Private fan-run Warcraft server Nostalrius had demonstrated there was strong demand for the game, serving as a refuge for over 800,000 nostalgic players before it succumbed to a cease and desist in 2016.

Now, those 800,000 players are getting to return to the good ol’ days — along with many, many, many others.

Unfortunately, it seems that the end result of World of Warcraft Classic‘s popularity is that many would-be players have been unable to get into the game. The servers appear to be packed to the brim, and many are griping about being hours-long wait times.

Though they’ve waited literal years for this, desperate World of Warcraft alumni are being forced to wait a little longer, staring helplessly at their ridiculously long wait times like confused consumers at the door of a closed shopping centre.

Once admitted to World of Warcraft Classic‘s hallowed halls, however, the waiting isn’t over.

Since everyone is trying to log on and play at the same time, everyone is trying to do the same quests and boss fights at the same time. This means that the non-player characters involved in these activities are constantly occupied.

Orcs, Dwarves, Night Elves and Tauren alike have thus formed orderly queues to tackle these quests, following one after another to bash enemies into submission as soon as they reappear. They’re like a crowd of very organised and polite bullies.

The whole enterprise may look tedious, but the thrill of returning to a 13-year-old game many spent countless hours playing seems to be making the lengthy queues slightly more bearable. Good things come to those who wait, after all.

World of Warcraft Classic is available to all players with an active subscription to World of Warcraft, which currently costs $85.80 for six months.
