Fantasy Casting: What If Doctor Who Had Been Australian This Whole Time?
Ahead of Doctor Who's return this weekend, we recast every single one of them.
1st Doctor: Chips Rafferty (1963 – 1966)
When the ABC launched the series in 1963, it scored a huge coup in its leading man. Chips Rafferty was Australia’s biggest, and some may say “only”, star of the era. He won over a generation of fans by playing the Doctor as a loveable, heroic father figure who kidnapped curious school teachers, attempted to bash in a caveman’s head with a rock, and abandoned his granddaughter in a dystopian future. (These were considered heroic acts in 1960s Australia.)
