What Are You REALLY Scared Of When It Comes To Disaster Films?
From Titanic to Sharknado, we look back at some classic disaster films and work out the real fears they capitalised on.
Titanic (1997)
Ostensible fear: Human error/icebergs/iceberg-induced drowning.
Actual fear: Dependent spouses.
Despite whatever the TV Hits super quiz had you believe, Leonardo DiCaprio was not the amazing heartthrob of your teenage dreams. Let’s break this down: Jack literally gambles his way onto the Titanic, where he does things like steals people’s coats, hangs off the stern of the ship and spits on the lower decks. Maybe he’s nicer than Billy Zane, but apart from the wealth that comes from drawing French prostitutes, Rose would pretty much have to provide for him the rest of her life.
That piercing blue eyes, straw-hair-falling-over-the-face-thing sure is swell, but Rose don’t want no scrubs. Sometimes there’s only room for one person on the raft, amirite ladies?
