Junkee Media, Australia’s leading youth publisher, is on the hunt for an exciting young talent to join our team based in Surry Hills, Sydney. Junkee Media’s funny, smart, ballsy and interesting take on news, film, politics, TV and more has seen it develop a strong following over the years, and 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting time for us. We’re looking for the right person to help take Junkee Media to the next level, working on an exciting new project, on a six-month contract.

The Ideal Candidate

Must have a wide breadth of knowledge and understanding of Australian news, and be able to respond to trending topics with a unique perspective. They will have their fingers on the pulse of all things current affairs in Australia and be able to generate multiple different angles on how to approach any story. They must be able to effortlessly research and script video news segments within a short turnaround, with confidence in the accuracy of their fact-checking and their ability to take a brief and execute it without much hand-holding.

They must also feel comfortable producing their segment as a whole. Where appropriate, they will source comments and quotes from both experts and social media. They will source supporting video, photo or audio assets to help tell their stories, and be comfortable in securing the correct rights and permissions to clear any assets used.

They must be a master storyteller, confident in being able to translate your stories on-screen, in a way that is engaging and interesting, without feeling forced. You must not be a “desperate-to-be-on-screen” type, but more an “I-love-explaining-things-in-cool-ways” type, and feel just as comfortable behind the camera as they are in front of it. The roles would be suited to any journalist/reporter who is looking to expand their on-screen experience, or to those dabbling in the YouTuber world with experience in journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Video News Director to sniff out news stories, and have ideas about how to tackle them from a unique angle.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated skill in story research, segment producing, and scriptwriting.
  • Ability to work to fast-turnaround deadlines, both autonomously and in a team.
  • To be the faces of the new video show.
  • To deliver news stories on camera, in a comfortable and engaging manner.
  • To be able to source any assets needed to help tell stories, and be proficient in securing the rights to use them.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Minimum 2-4 years’ experience working as a journalist/producer/reporter/academic.
  • Experience being an on-camera host.
  • A basic understanding of the video production process.
  • Computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. A knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud apps (Premiere, Photoshop, After Effects) and/or Mac operations would be beneficial.
  • Strong understanding of, and passion for, the youth communications space.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • An understanding of, and alignment with, Junkee Media’s Vision, Purpose and Core Values
