Watch What So Not Take On A Monster Wave Off The Coast Of Tassie
Well this is bloody terrifying.
It’s been a huge year for What So Not. The Sydney DJ and producer recently closed out the Mix Up tent on the final night of Splendour in the Grass, has convinced Daniel Johns to perform ‘Freak’ live for the first time in a decade and even went so hard at a gig a couple of months ago that he scored a concussion for his troubles.
Now, the man born Chris Emerson is shifting his focus to a whole new surrounds. An avid bodyboarder, What So Not headed straight from Splendour at the end of last month all the way down to the most southerly point of Australia: Shipstern Bluff, on the Tasman Peninsula with waves coming in from the Antarctic ocean.
There, he took on one of the most famous big waves in the world — and now, he has uploaded a short film of his travels documenting the entire experience. Featuring original soundtrack work from Emerson himself, What So Not goes into gripping detail of how the encounter came to be in the video’s description.
“The day starts with a water and air temp of 44°F, [a] one hour boat ride out to a great white shark meca [sic] and news that ‘it’s on’,” he writes. “We pull up to this oceanic amphitheatre as the only skerrick of humanity and I start to understand what is about to take place. Nature is in control here.”
Shot and produced by videographer Luke Eblen, the whole thing is a pretty entertaining (read: slightly terrifying) watch — whether you’re a fan of surf videos, What So Not’s music or even a combination of the two. It’s nothing short of impressive to see anyone take on such a gargantuan wash of water, let alone someone who was probably raving out of their minds not 48 hours prior.
