Best Coast, aka Beth Cosentino and co, recently got cosy in a studio with director Ryan Reichenfeld to record a live video for ‘Baby I’m Crying’, off last year’s Fade Away EP.

“I like that song. But why is that interesting?”, you might be quietly wondering. Well, because it’s the future! They did it all with some groundbreaking “binaural audio recording technology”, which seems to mean performing straight into a microphone shaped like a dummy’s head, rather than those phallic things you grab seductively at karaoke.

“The advantages of three-dimensional sound are quite interesting,” says tech guy Martyn Ware, “formerly of the Human League”. “For a start, you don’t have to squeeze the sound like a toothpaste tube through two speakers.”

Toothpaste analogies always make things easier to understand. The final result is supposed to sound like you’re right there in the room with them. Grab your nearest headphones, enjoy the ambient atmosphere, and escape your office confines for a sweet couple of minutes.
