Watch An Alternate Ending For ‘Trainwreck’ And An Exclusive Clip Of The Stars “Liberating A Horse”
If you thought the film's actual ending was cheesy, wait till you see it with added baby.
Was this year’s Trainwreck, written by and starring Amy Schumer, the crowning achievement to a year-long knock-out rise to superstardom? Or were you amongst the hordes of fans who want nothing but nuclear-level, feminist, sex-positive truth-bombs from the comedian, and found the whole thing a compromised let down? The debate continues!
In the lead-up to the DVD release of the film, Entertainment Weekly has scored a first-look at an alternate ending included in the bonus extras and a few thoughts from director Judd Apatow about why it was cut. “The moment where [Amy Schumer and Bill Hader] talk and kiss after the cheerleading sequence was so great that we knew we couldn’t top it,” he said. “But it is always wise to shoot something with a baby. Who hates a movie that ends with a baby? Just Darth Vader.”
WARNING: If you were angry about the film’s unapologetic commercial rom-com finale, this glimpse into what may have been will probably just stir up those feels again.
The coda delivers a classic Schumer joking/not joking voiceover, over some generic happy family footage of herself, Bill Hader, Brie Larson and Mike Birbiglia being all nice and Sunday stroll-y. Does Amy still think she needs to cut down on her drinking to be good enough for her man? Is she still guilty about not feeling any affection towards her sister’s weird kid? Is the only acceptable narrative for a contemporary woman one that ends with a baby? Maybe!
It’s tricky to decide whether the bonus ending is indicative of the constantly unsure character, the movie’s need to make everyone happy, or Judd Apatow’s inability to say the phrase “That’s a wrap!”. Perhaps it’s all three.
Thanks to our own exclusive footage, you can also get some closure on all that stuff that was in the trailer, but not the film. Remember all those scenes of Schumer and Hader carousing around town, doing shots, stealing horses, and having a good time? No? You weren’t obsessed with why the trailer showed bits that were left on the cutting room floor? That was just us?
Anyway, here’s a clip of Bill Hader and Amy Schumer stealing a horse:
Regardless of how you felt about the movie — come on, it was very funny and charming — it will be worth checking out the DVD, if only to see whether Schumer delivered an even longer riff of perfect dick jokes.
