Brisbane band WAAX have released a statement condemning “disgraceful” and “disrespectful” crowd behaviour after an alleged assault took place at their gig on the weekend.

The band were playing at Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art alongside Tia Gostelow and The Hi-Boys last Friday, and were informed the following day that an alleged assault on a young woman had taken place during their set.

“Last night we had an epic show which up until the last moments was really special,” lead singer Maz wrote in a statement shared across socials on Saturday. “However, this morning we were informed about an assault on a young woman which has been absolutely horrific to hear about.

“The perpetrator represents all that we stand against and have fought tirelessly to call out over the last nine years of being a band. I’m deeply disturbed to be back here again, making a statement — this situation is all too familiar for me which is all kinds of fucked up. How many times do we have to say it? How many people must be hurt and humiliated? When will this end? Violence, abuse, and misogyny are systemic shit stains on an already fragile social fabric.

“Dear person who punched an innocent young woman in the face at my show: you are not welcome in our community. You are not a fan. You have disrespected our community and our music. Disgraceful.”

She finishes by asking fans with any information about the incident or the person involved to come forward, so that “he and his lowlife friends never set foot in our shows again”.

Her comments come as Australia is engulfed in a national discussion about misogyny, sexual harassment, and rape culture — sparked by revelations of the alleged rape of former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins, and the historical rape accusation against Attorney-General Christian Porter (which he strenuously denies).
