Inherent Vice

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Joanna Newsom, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson

Released: March 12

“Coming just in time for Christmas!” said the trailer. Not in Australia, Doc.

Based on one of Thomas Pynchon’s more mainstream novels, this also seems like one of Paul Thomas Anderson’s more mainstream films. With its groovy 1970 LA setting, convoluted crime caper plot, deadpan humour and huge, star-studded cast, it seems more like a Coen brothers adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel. But it promises more shaggy entertainment than an orgy on a flokati rug.
