A few years ago, Kurt Vile kicked off a minor controversy when he said punk was dead. But he was kinda right. Punk as a genre might have totally shifted — but the spirit of punk is alive in hip-hop groups like Sydney’s own Triple One.

One of the most abrasive and unapologetic bands on the scene, Triple One make music that rattles with energy and wit. ‘Overflow’, their breakout single, is a mean, bristle-edged thing, and they’ve only gotten more abrasive since that song dropped.

Contrast that to their in-person demeanour. In the flesh, the band are chatty, optimistic and down-right hilarious, as Music Junkee discovered when two members — Billy Gunns and Marty Large — came in for The Artist Alphabet, a video series that encourages musicians to share their strangest stories.

And Triple One had some doozies.

Kicking things off with a discussion of the time a Polish fan presented members of the group with a fresh pair of undies after spotting that their usual ones had a hole in them, the band’s stories only got wilder from there. After all, how many hip hop groups can lay claim to getting poisoned by their mum?

“Shout-out to my mum for giving my whole family, myself and Martin salmonella for Christmas,” Gunn explained, outlining how a bad salmon made them all extremely sick.

“Both ends,” Large added.

“It starts to get really bad,” Gunn said. “My uncle and cousin are in hospital. Meanwhile, we’re on the plane, flying to our first leg of Falls festival.”

“We’re sweaty,” Bukkake Large said. “We can’t see. We don’t want to open our eyes.”

How’s that for dedication? Watch the whole wonderfully depraved interview below.
