TikTok Will Give You The Best Seat In The House This Mardi Gras
Watch The Mardi Gras Parade LIVE on TikTok, March 5, 7pm AEDT
You won’t miss a moment of glitter this Mardi Gras thanks to TikTok, with the platform’s larger-than-life plans to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community, with a #MardiGras Hub and LIVE stream from the parade featuring pop-superstar Wafia and more queer icons.
Whether you’re marching loud and proud or cheering along in the stadium or at home, TikTok has you covered as an official partner of Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras 2022. Given that this year’s theme is ‘United We Shine’, it’s a no-brainer that TikTok is involved: the platform is home to many vibrant LGBTQ+ communities, allowing everyone to find their people, no matter how niche their interests are (shout-out to #nonbinarysaucetok, where enbies share literal sauce recipes).
There’s also the For You Page’s astonishing ability to know you better than you know yourself, whether that means broadening your horizons or serving up LGBTQ+ content to people just awakening to their own queerness. And then, of course, sometimes the For You Page just reads you to filth, by (speaking from experience) exclusively serving up cute tender-queers with DIY haircuts, carabiner keychains and endless stick ‘n’ pokes.
Ahead of the world-famous parade on Saturday March 5 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, TikTok is launching its #MardiGras Hub to be the one-stop spot for all your videos, content and jaw-dropping looks from the festival.
There will also be a LIVE stream from 7pm AEDT, offering behind the scenes footage as queer creators get ready for TikTok’s own float before streaming the parade in all its glory. We’re not going to spoil the surprise, but expect big, bright and colourful – and a smash performance from triple j favourite and queer Sydney artist Wafia of her hit ‘I’m Good’. Something of a Pride anthem mixed with a dash of ‘thank u, next’ energy, it’s soundtracked over 44,000 TikToks. It’ll go off, especially as Wafia will be joined on the float by five fabulous drag queens, and an all-queer team of artists, designers, choreographers, and creators are working together to put on a sickening show.
You’ll be able to find the #MardiGras Hub via TikTok’s Discover Page, where you’ll be sure to see lots of familiar faces of LGBTQ+ creators who have found their own community and voice on TikTok. Expect to see the likes of Gladys Berejiklian’s ex-receptionist Carla From Bankstown, comedian Mitchell Coombs and Rudy Rigg, the historian behind @rainbowhistoryclass, the account that shines a light on under-appreciated stories of LGBTIQ+ resilience and joy. There’s nowhere better to be this Mardi Gras.
