The reactions have been very...mixed.

In case you missed it, TikTok has announced they will be increasing the maximum length of their videos to 10 whole damn minutes.

The change comes about eight months after the company expanded the maximum length of their videos from one to three minutes.

“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement. “Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok. Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”

It’s unclear what TikTok are trying to achieve, but we’re guessing that the company is probably feeling the pressure from the likes of YouTube to offer users the option to make long-form content. Longer videos would also mean that the users will spend more time on the app, which is, you know, convenient.

Meanwhile, of course, the rise of TikTok means that platforms like Instagram, YouTube and Facebook have scrambled to push out their TikTok-inspired content makers in the form of Instagram Reels, YouTube shorts and Facebook stories.

Can’t these apps embrace themselves for who they are? Sad.

Reactions from users to the platform tripling their maximum video length from three to 10 minutes have been varied, to say the least.

This woman seems to be aggressively happy about the change, as she simply had enough of dealing with videos that are split into separate parts.

This fast-talking man seems less moved by the update, and seems to think it goes against the grain of the TikTok ethos which is to take in some bite-sized videos and relax. He reckons that the platform is now turning into YouTube, before taking the opportunity to spruik his YouTube page. Good for him.

Most reactions to the longer video time, though, seem pretty negative.

This person, to be fair, speaks the truth.
