The Ten Best SNL Sketches of 2014
Stefon returns.
9. Blue River Dog Food
To paraphrase dearly departed SNL correspondent Stefon, this sketch has everything: Seth Rogen, a cute puppy that may be brain-dead, a woman with nowhere to turn (aka, Cecily Strong, screaming bloody murder). There’s a hypnotic, hilarious escalation to this infomercial gone very, very wrong.
It has its roots in a timeless Will Ferrell tableau from Season 23, continuing the tradition of making the audience as uncomfortable as possible and hoping their nervous laughter will be loud enough to fill the awkward silences. There aren’t many live skits on this list, you’ll notice. Perhaps Lorne should spend more time encouraging bold ones like ‘Blue River Dog Food’, rather than simply having more game shows.
