‘The Rook’ Looks Like The Supernatural Spy Thriller Of Our Hopes And Dreams
Magical spies!
Stan has released the trailer for their upcoming supernatural thriller The Rook, and my hopes are extremely high.
We know that the show follows the story of Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell) who “wakes up” on a bridge in London, surrounded by bodies. She also has no idea who she is.
Unlike the recent spree of amnesia narratives, this is not because of a weird and explainable accident — the culprit is the supernatural. Soon, Myfanwy finds that she’s embroiled in a secret supernatural agency called the Chequay.
The series is based off the extremely popular, and very cool book of the same name, by Australian author Daniel O’Malley. If the show is even half as enjoyable as the books, then we’re in for a treat. Kinda American Gods meets The Americans — but it’s all very British.
However, even at this early stage we can see that adapting the story for the screen has taken some liberties with the original text. Olivia Munn’s character Monica Reed is billed as one of the “main cast”, yet in the book, she’s only a cameo. That’s fine though! No judgement! Adaptations don’t have to be faithful to the letter.
I’m so excited! I cannot stress how good this book is.
Anyway, watch the trailer and keep an eye out for a release date — Australian audiences will be able to watch it on Stan.
