7am is one of Australia’s most beloved daily news podcasts, and now the folks over at Schwartz media will have your pop-culture deep dives covered too with their new podcast, The Culture.

The new podcast is hosted by none other than national treasure, award-winning journalist and pop-culture obsessive, Osman Faruqi. Faruqi is no stranger to in-depth culture critique, having been a presenter on ABC’s arts and culture The Mix, columnist at music magazine NME, and even editor here at Junkee.

Every week, Faruqi will be your guide, wading through the latest and greatest in film, tv, streaming and everything in between.

The show will feature conversations with noted Aussie critics including Anwen Crawford, Shaad D’Souza, Christos Tsiolkas and Bri Lee, as well as commentators from around the world. Not to mention, the series will also include interviews with local and international musicians, filmmakers, writers and other artists about their work

The Culture is a show I’ve wanted to make for a long time,” said Host, Faruqi. “The show will be mainstream and accessible but also won’t shy away from discussing broader social themes that emerge from discussions around film, music and TV. Think of an Australian Still Processing, the NYT culture podcast.”

As a longtime dedicated listener of both 7am and Still Processing, I am already ready to devour The Culture. The podcast’s debut episode, ‘the problem with our true crime obsession’ is out now, asking the tough question- what does our current obsession with True Crime documentaries like Tiger King and Making a Murderer say about us as a society?

Faruqi added: “Long-form, engaging cultural criticism is something we desperately need more of in this country and I’m stoked we’re creating something new in this space.”

Publishing weekly on Fridays, episodes will be between 30 and 40 minutes long. Not that you needed yet another reason to look forward to the end of the working week.

The Culture is out now and is available to listen on AppleSpotify, Google Podcasts and all other podcast apps.
