Sunday Sorted: Here’s What You & Your Crew Can Do This Weekend

Indigenous Art Gallery
Brought to you by Smirnoff

Smirnoff Pure: vodka and natural ingredients, that’s all.

With Christmas a mere 19 days away, there’s never been a better time to insert your head firmly into the sand and ignore all present-buying and work-related responsibilities.

Here’s a guide to the best ways to procrastinate with your mates this weekend – from a kombucha-making workshop in Melbourne and a northern road trip in Tassie, to art and dumplings in Sydney. Christmas can wait!

Melbourne: Learn A New Skill At Work-Shop

Serious question: how much money have you and your friends spent on kombucha in the last 12 months? If that figure is higher than you’d care to admit, you need to attend The Mighty Booch, a masterclass lead by the formidable Jessica Scott, AKA The Fermented Mumma, at Work-Shop Fitzroy. Not only will Scott introduce you to the wild world of SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) and all things fermented, she’ll leave you with the skills required to make your very own ‘booch at home. You’ll also score a 3.4L jar of kombucha, ready to ferment. Cool, huh?

Sessions are $65 a pop.

Sydney: Tea, Dumplings & Chinese Art At White Rabbit Gallery

Spice up your Sunday arvo with a taste of frontier-pushing art from China at White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale. The gallery’s newest exhibition, Supernatural, engages with the existential threats facing the world today: black ceramic pieces depicting an oil spill are stuck to the walls, bleak, rubbish-strewn landscapes abound, and half-man-half-dragonfly hybrid creatures are projected from the ceiling.

The works exhibited are at once poignant and unsettling – prime fodder for a post-exhibition meal of dumplings and green tea in the gallery tea house – so make a day of it. Supernatural runs through to February 3, 2019.

Hobart: Day Trip To Launceston

Take a break from the usual sights and sounds of Hobart this weekend by hopping in the car and driving to Launceston, which is just two hours north of the capital. Rally the architecture nerds in your group and ogle the scintillating pastiche of styles lining the streets – from Art Deco to Georgian – before heading to Cataract Gorge for a nature hit.

And then, of course there’s the food. Head to Stillwater for contemporary Tassie cuisine and the full silver-service experience, or Blue Café Bar for a more relaxed vibe and long, lazy weekend lunches. Be sure to allocate a decent amount of time to explore Tamar Valley, Tasmania’s food and wine cornucopia.

If you’re feeling the pre-pay-day pinch, head to Kangaroo Point and soak up Brisbane’s cultural spoils without forking out a cent. The River Public Art Trail is a 2.4km stretch of path peppered with all kinds of art, from contemporary sculptures made of metal to pieces inspired by Brisbane’s Aboriginal heritage.

Stroll or cycle along the boardwalk, making time for pit-stops at iconic works like Peter D Cole’s The Man and Matter Series and World Expo, Mona Ryder’s Crossover Guardians and Wormholes by Alexander Knox. By the time you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll be poised for a picnic at Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park.
