One of the saddest and most enduring questions that Star Wars fans have for the final instalment of the new trilogy, Star Wars Episode IX, is the fate of Princess Leia.

Beloved actress Carrie Fisher tragically passed away — drowned in moonlight, strangled by her own bra — in 2016. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Oscar Isaac who plays the handsome X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron has confirmed that LucasFilm’s plan for Fisher’s character General Leia Organa Solo will be respectful and beautiful.

“It deals with the amazing character that Carrie created in a really beautiful way,” he says, which is just so nice to hear.

The films have already farewelled iconic original characters Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, so it would be a shame to not have the chance to properly farewell Princess Leia.

Director J.J. Abrams is returning to the trilogy for the next film, and has confirmed that unseen footage of Fisher from that previous film will ensure that Leia does appear, if only briefly.

There were also rumours that LucasFilms would digitally recreate Carrie Fisher for the last film, which they squashed in a statement.

“We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa,” they said on Starwars.com.

“Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.”

Oscar Isaac promises that Star Wars Episode IX pays homage to both Princess Leia and Carrie Fisher.

“The story deals with that quite a bit,” he says. “It’s a strange thing to be on the set and to be speaking of Leia and having Carrie not be around. There’s definitely some pain in that.”

Star Wars Episode IX is slated to come out in December 2019.
