Well, the day is finally here: Spider-Man is out of a job.

Yep, as you’ve probably heard, Sony and Disney have parted ways. That’s pretty unsurprising: the two companies have always had a somewhat contentious relationship when it comes to the subject of New York’s own webslinger. Sony owns the property but essentially loaned out Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the condition that the MCU movies made them a lot of money. Which they did, with Spider-Man: Far From Home obliterating the billion-dollar mark.

But everybody wants a piece of the superhero pie these days, and Sony probably reckon they can do old Spidey just fine by themselves, thanks very much. After all, the astonishingly bizarre Venom somehow made them a shedload of money, and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was an overwhelming critical success. So, they’ve walked off in a huff and taken Spidey with them, leaving the public with only seventy-five Marvel movies per year, rather than seventy-six.

Anyway, the split’s not only bad news for Spidey; it’s bad news for Tom Holland, the star who plays him. The young actor is actually still contractually obligated to make two more Spider-Man movies — just now, he’ll somehow be making them without any reference to the MCU. That means no Iron Man references, snap references, Avengers references… So, uh, who knows what those movies will actually look like?

Anyway, while all this legal shit is getting sorted out, the man’s loyal fanbase is here to help him out, devising a series of new careers he can embark upon now he’s unemployed.

Anyway, don’t feel too sorry for Tom. He’s already been set up as the star of an Uncharted adaptation — who knows, the gent could find a new franchise for himself before you know it.
