Sony Are Remaking ’90s Cult Classic ‘The Craft’ And Fans Of The Original Are Quite Displeased
'The Craft' was one of THE teen movies of the '90s. You can't improve on perfection.
1996 cult horror classic The Craft (which only has a 6.2 rating on IMDb, for some reason) scared the absolute bejesus out of eight-year-old me. I watched it with my older cousins one Christmas, and I was in no way ready for the whirlwind of Gothic murder that was Nancy.
But like all your most vivid childhood memories, The Craft is getting dug up for a redo. There’s not a huge amont of info out there at this early stage, but according to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony have contracted rookie filmmaker Leigh Janiak to write and direct the new script. Janiak’s debut Honeymoon, which premiered to acclaim at South by Southwest in March last year, was a slow-burner suspense horror starring two newlyweds who encounter something deeply wrong on vacation in the woods.
Despite Janiak’s directorial chops she’s got her work cut out convincing fans of the original that a remake is desirable, or even necessary. The Craft was an underground hit because its supernatural setting served as a fantastic backdrop to explore common teen-movie themes like isolation, fitting in, social anxiety and sexual confusion in ways that resonated with its target audience. It attracted fierce loyalty from people who saw themselves in the characters, which partly explains why news of the redo has predominantly been met with hostility.
wait, the craft is getting remade??

Only time will tell whether or not Sony and Janiak pull it off, but they’ve got a lot to live up to.
