Worthy protest or incredibly poor taste?

“It’s art, dad!”, presumably yelled street artist ‘Plastic Jesus’, as his most recent work — a 2-metre tall, heroin-shooting Oscar statue, titled ‘Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret’ — was removed from the intersection of Hollywood and LaBrea in Los Angeles over the weekend, just metres from the red carpet of today’s ceremony.

“I’m not out there shouting for the abolition of all drugs,” the British-born artist told The Wrap. “The piece is really to bring attention about the lack of understanding and support. In Hollywood, people almost proudly boast that they’re a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. However, with hard drug use, there’s still so much of  a stigma attached. It’s swept under the carpet and people don’t get the support that should be available to them.”

Unfortunately, Jesus’s timing left a little to be desired. He unveiled the statue on the same day that late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s autopsy results were revealed (whoops!). The artist was forced to removed the statue after someone “claiming to be from the city” threatened to chuck it in the Pacific Ocean. Oh my god, we don’t even wanna think about what Meryl Streep would’ve done to him had she seen that thing.
