Back in the habit of re-booting everything ever.

Sometimes I think about what the film industry might look like in thirty years time, and shudder with horror. Will there be Masterchef! The Movie? Will someone who hasn’t been born yet be playing James Bond? Or worse, Jason Bourne?

Reboots are nothing new, but they are starting to get personal — and it seems that they are cropping up with increasing frequency.

Which brings us to today’s news: that Disney has greenlit a Sister Act reboot. The two films that already exist in the franchise are beloved, and even inspired a musical.

The second and most recent Sister Act film came out in 1993, but in terms of evaluating success, the passage of time before a sequel or a reboot is made is neither here nor there. It worked out fine for Mad Max: Fury Road. It worked out less fine for Indiana Jones and the  Alien Movie That Should Never Have Happened.

Moreover, information about the new Sister Act film is scant. We don’t know who the cast will be, we don’t know if Whoopi Goldberg, Lauryn Hill or Maggie Smith will be returning. We don’t know if it will be a sequel to the existing films or a re-make. All we know is that it will be produced by Cinderella’s Allison Shearmur, and that  Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah will be writing it — the team responsible for 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, House Bunny and She’s The Man.  I’m allowing myself to feel cautiously optimistic; they’ve rebooted Shakespeare before — maybe they can make this work.

But with everyone still reeling from the news of the proposed remake of The Craft, people are having some Real Feelings.

And with this news unfortunately coinciding with the announcement that Tron 3 has been cancelled, many people seem to be feeling that Disney has literally snatched the money from Tron and haemorrhaged it into Sister Act — making the buzz around the project that much worse.

But not everyone is left shaking their head. At least this one guy’s excited.
