Seven “Fashions Of The Moment” More Radical Than Marriage Equality

Yesterday on radio, when talking about marriage equality with John Laws, Tony Abbott said that he is “not someone who wants to see radical change based on the fashion of the moment”. People did not take to this comment particularly well.

One of those people was Katy Perry. Perry “interviewed” Abbott on 2DayFM this morning– a hideously cringeworthy exchange set up by Kyle & Jackie O,which Abbott opened by asking the singer when she’d be touring Australia next. “Ah, c’mon,” she replied. “That’s not a political question, let’s talk about gay marriage!”

And so they did.

So Tony Abbott appears to think marriage equality is a “fashion of the moment” — a fleeting style that should therefore not be enshrined in policy.

I thought it was important to put his comments into perspective.

Seven “Fashions Of The Moment” More Radical Than Marriage Equality

1. Shoes Made From A Dead Animal

Think two men wanting to get married is crazy? LOOK AT THESE SHOES.

2. The Face-Kini

Whilst two consenting adults wanting to commit to a life of happiness might seem a little BIZARRE, wearing a mask over your face for sun protection is taking weirdness even further.

3. A Bacon Bra

You thought two women walking down the aisle was too much to deal with? Try wearing a bacon bra and not getting hungry.

4. Teddy Bear Pants

You know what they say: ‘First you let the gays get married, THEN YOU GET MEN EVERYWHERE WEARING TEDDY BEARS ON THEIR PANTS’.

5. Picnic Table Pants

Whilst these pants are clearly practical, they’re still a little more cray than marriage equality.

6. A Shoe That Is Also A Boat

7. This Hat

As a prominent supporter of marriage equality, I’m sure Lady Gaga would agree that this hat is more radical than marriage equality.

Marriage equality isn’t a fashion trend, Tony. And it’s really not that radical.
