With Donald Trump riding high in the polls and looking to clinch the Republican nomination in today’s major primary contests, it’s worth asking who’s actually rooting for this racist, sexist, sectarian, lying, hypocritical, quasi-fascist, deeply unlikeable guy to win.
The blatant racist overtones and increasing violence of his rallies, egged on by the man himself, only give a partial insight; for every yahoo who turns up to a Trump event and punches a protester in the face, there are plenty who stay home until polling day. Full Frontal‘s Samantha Bee set out on a fact-finding mission: round up some Trump supporters, sit down with them, and have an open and honest conversation to find out what makes them tick.
The ten Trump fans she found initially seem to cut against the popular media depiction of Trump supporters as frothing-at-the-mouth white supremacists: they’re young, clean-cut, articulate, multiracial and polite.
At least, until the conversation moves on to certain hairy topics, like whether violence against protesters is acceptable, or deporting Muslims from the United States. Then things get a little tense.
