Ryan Reynolds Quips, Dodges Explosions In First Trailer For Netflix’s ‘6 Underground’
Featuring fast cars, exploding pools, and a magnetized ship.
In a way, a collaboration between king of the quips Ryan Reynolds and king of the explosions Michael Bay felt inevitable.
After all, Bay, the director of Transformers and Pearl Harbour, has spent his entire career working with subversive, droll leading men. His kind of hero is one who can lob a grenade and then a smarmy, subversive joke, one after the other; a likeable anarchist just as quick to poke fun at you as he is to take down an enemy fighter jet.
And who more fits that mold these days than Reynolds? Morphing from bizarro comedy star to action hero extraordinaire, Reynolds is the American ideal of dry, laconic hero. That’s in part because of his time spent as Deadpool, of course — who is more subversive than an action hero who knows he’s in an action movie? But that’s even the energy he brought to his odd role as the titular Detective Pikachu.
So yeah, it wasn’t a question of ‘if’ the two would pair up, it was a question of ‘when’. And the answer? This very year, with the release of Netflix’s new mega-budgeted hit 6 Underground.
The trailer for the new film is pretty light on details. Clearly, Reynolds is the leader of a gang of rogues; criminals who have faked their deaths and are spending their afterlives making themselves very rich. Part of that plan has them come up against a so-called “very bad man”, a maniacal genius armed with fighter jets who decides to take them down, and quick.
Other than that light but intriguing premise, the trailer is a calvacade of extraordinary set-pieces, featuring exploding pools, magnetized ships, grenades, bombs, guns, and lots of very fast cars.
Essentially, it looks like exactly what the doctor ordered; beautiful, blissful, big-budget cheese.
6 Underground hits Netflix this December 13. Watch the trailer in full below:
